About this exercise

The dumbbell lying rear lateral raise targets the rear deltoids and upper back by having you lie face down on a flat bench and raise the dumbbells out to the sides. This prone position isolates the rear shoulder better than standing variants by removing momentum and minimizing trap involvement.

How to Perform

  • Set a flat bench and lie face down with your chest near the top edge, feet flat on the floor
  • Hold a dumbbell in each hand with a neutral grip, arms hanging straight down
  • Keep a slight bend in your elbows and retract your shoulder blades slightly
  • Raise both arms out to the sides in an arc until they reach shoulder height
  • Squeeze the rear deltoids at the top of the movement
  • Lower the dumbbells slowly back to the starting position under control
