Dumbbell Lying Rear Delt Row

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Dumbbell Lying Rear Delt Row.

MediumRear shouldersTrapezius

About this exercise

The dumbbell lying rear delt row is performed face-down on a horizontal bench, isolating the rear deltoids and upper back by removing any torso movement. Lying prone eliminates lower back strain and prevents the use of momentum, making it an effective isolation exercise for the posterior shoulder.

How to Perform

  • Set a horizontal bench to a low height and lie face-down with your chest on the bench
  • Hold a dumbbell in each hand, arms hanging straight down with palms facing each other
  • Keep your head in a neutral position and neck relaxed
  • Row both dumbbells upward and outward, leading with your elbows and squeezing your rear delts
  • Raise until your upper arms are parallel to the floor or slightly above
  • Hold the contracted position briefly, then lower the dumbbells slowly back to the start
  • Avoid shrugging your shoulders or rotating your torso during the movement
