About this exercise

The lying prone shoulder extension strengthens the rear deltoids and upper back by moving the arms from a forward position backward while lying face down. The prone position eliminates momentum and isolates the posterior shoulder muscles through a controlled range of motion.

How to Perform

  • Lie face down on a flat surface with your legs extended and forehead resting lightly on the floor
  • Extend both arms straight forward along the floor with palms facing each other
  • Keeping your elbows straight, lift both arms off the floor and sweep them backward along your sides as far as comfortable
  • Hold the end position briefly, squeezing the rear deltoids and upper back
  • Slowly lower your arms back to the starting position under control
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions
