About this exercise

A rear deltoid isolation exercise performed lying on one side, raising one dumbbell in a lateral arc to target the posterior shoulder. The side-lying position stabilizes the torso and reduces momentum, making it an excellent corrective and finishing move for the rear delts.

How to Perform

  • Lie on your side on a flat bench with your body fully supported, holding a light dumbbell in the top hand with the arm resting along your side
  • Brace your core and keep your hips stacked
  • Raise the dumbbell upward and slightly behind you in a wide lateral arc, keeping a slight bend in the elbow
  • Continue until your arm is roughly parallel to the floor and you feel the rear deltoid contract
  • Lower the dumbbell back to the starting position in a slow, controlled manner
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching
