About this exercise

The dumbbell lying on floor rear delt raise is performed face down on the floor, raising both dumbbells out to the sides to target the posterior deltoids. The floor limits the range of motion slightly compared to a bench, making it a more accessible variation that still effectively isolates the rear delts.

How to Perform

  • Lie face down on the floor with a dumbbell in each hand, arms extended out to the sides with a slight bend at the elbows
  • Keep your forehead resting on the floor or on a rolled towel to maintain a neutral neck
  • Keeping your core braced, raise both arms out to the sides as high as comfortably possible
  • Squeeze the rear deltoids at the top of the movement
  • Slowly lower the dumbbells back to the starting position under control
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions
