About this exercise

The dumbbell lying leg curl is a hamstring isolation exercise that mimics the movement of a leg curl machine using a dumbbell held between the feet. Lying face-down on a bench or the floor, you curl the dumbbell toward the glutes by bending the knees.

How to Perform

  • Place a dumbbell vertically on the floor at the end of a bench
  • Lie face-down on the bench (or floor) with your legs extended and feet hanging off the edge
  • Grip the dumbbell between your feet by placing the top plate against the arches of both feet
  • Keep your hips pressed down and your thighs flat on the bench surface
  • Curl the dumbbell upward by bending your knees until your lower legs are roughly perpendicular to the floor
  • Squeeze your hamstrings at the top of the movement
  • Lower the dumbbell slowly back to the starting position under control
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions

About the Dumbbell Lying Leg Curl

The Dumbbell Lying Leg Curl is a foundational movement that builds strength and muscle through controlled, progressive overload. Train it 1 to 2 times per week with 3 to 5 working sets per session, gradually adding weight or reps as form holds up.
