About this exercise

The dumbbell lying hamstring curl is an isolation exercise for the hamstrings performed face-down, using a single dumbbell held between the feet. It mimics the movement pattern of a lying leg curl machine while requiring body stability and grip through the feet.

How to Perform

  • Lie face down on a flat bench or on the floor with your legs extended
  • Place a dumbbell between your feet and grip it firmly by pressing the insteps together
  • Keep your hips pressed down and your core braced throughout the movement
  • Curl your heels toward your glutes by bending at the knees as far as comfortable
  • Pause at the top to maximally contract your hamstrings
  • Slowly lower the dumbbell back to the starting position under control
