About this exercise

A rotator cuff strengthening exercise performed lying on your side, rotating a light dumbbell outward from a 90-degree elbow position. It specifically targets the posterior rotator cuff muscles (infraspinatus and teres minor) and improves shoulder stability.

How to Perform

  • Lie on your side on a bench or the floor with your lower arm supporting your head
  • Hold a light dumbbell in your upper hand with the elbow bent to 90 degrees and tucked against your side
  • Keep your upper arm parallel to the floor and your elbow fixed in place
  • Rotate your forearm upward (externally) until it is roughly vertical or as far as comfortable
  • Pause briefly at the top, then slowly lower the dumbbell back to the starting position
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching
