About this exercise

The dumbbell lying alternate extension is a triceps isolation exercise performed flat on a bench, lowering one dumbbell at a time toward your head while the other arm remains extended. Alternating arms allows for a strong mind-muscle connection and independent development of each tricep.

How to Perform

  • Lie flat on a bench holding a dumbbell in each hand, both arms extended above your chest, palms facing each other
  • Keep one arm stationary and slowly lower the other dumbbell toward your head by bending at the elbow
  • Lower until the dumbbell is just beside your temple, keeping your upper arm perpendicular to the floor
  • Extend your elbow to press the dumbbell back to the starting position
  • Repeat the movement on the opposite arm, alternating with each repetition
  • Maintain a stable torso and avoid arching your lower back throughout
