About this exercise

The dumbbell lateral walk is a loaded lateral movement that targets the glutes, hip abductors, and quadriceps by stepping sideways while carrying dumbbells. The added weight increases demand on the hips and legs compared to a bodyweight lateral walk.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet hip-width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand at your sides
  • Sit slightly into a quarter-squat position to engage your glutes and keep tension on the legs throughout
  • Take a wide lateral step to one side, landing with control
  • Bring your trailing foot in to return to hip-width stance, completing one step
  • Continue stepping in the same direction for the desired number of steps
  • Switch directions and repeat for the same number of steps on the other side
