About this exercise

The Dumbbell Lateral Step-Up is a unilateral lower-body exercise where you step sideways onto a platform while holding dumbbells, developing single-leg strength and frontal-plane stability in the quadriceps, glutes, and hip stabilisers. The lateral approach recruits hip abductors and adductors as secondary stabilisers alongside the primary movers.

How to Perform

  • Stand to the side of a sturdy step or box, holding a dumbbell in each hand at your sides
  • Place your near foot flat on top of the step so the entire foot is fully supported
  • Drive through the heel of the elevated foot to press yourself upward until the lead leg is fully extended
  • Bring the trailing leg up alongside the lead leg so you are standing fully on the step
  • Slowly lower the trailing leg back to the floor with control
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching to the other leg
