About this exercise

A rear deltoid isolation exercise performed lying prone on an incline bench, raising dumbbells out to the sides to target the posterior shoulder and upper back. The incline position eliminates body momentum, keeping constant tension on the rear delts.

How to Perform

  • Set an adjustable bench to a 30–45 degree incline and lie face-down with your chest supported against the pad
  • Hold a dumbbell in each hand with arms hanging straight down and a slight bend at the elbows
  • Raise both dumbbells out to the sides in a wide arc, leading with your elbows
  • Squeeze the rear delts and upper back at the top of the movement
  • Hold the top position briefly before lowering the dumbbells back down under control
  • Keep the movement slow and controlled to avoid using momentum
