About this exercise

The dumbbell incline Powell raise is a rotator cuff and posterior shoulder strengthening exercise performed lying face down on an incline bench. Holding a light dumbbell in one hand, you perform an external rotation arc to target the infraspinatus and posterior deltoid. It is widely used for shoulder health, injury prevention, and rehabilitation.

How to Perform

  • Set an adjustable bench to a 30–45 degree incline and lie face down with your chest on the pad
  • Hold a light dumbbell in one hand, letting it hang straight down toward the floor with your elbow slightly bent
  • Keeping your elbow angle fixed, externally rotate your shoulder and raise the dumbbell in an arc out to the side and upward until your arm is roughly parallel to the floor
  • Pause briefly at the top and squeeze the rear delt and rotator cuff muscles
  • Lower the dumbbell slowly back to the starting position under control
