About this exercise

An isolation shoulder exercise performed lying on the side on an incline bench, raising a single dumbbell out to the side to target the medial deltoid. The incline position restricts body momentum, placing constant tension on the shoulder throughout the movement.

How to Perform

  • Set an adjustable bench to a 45–60 degree incline and lie on your side with your body fully supported
  • Hold a dumbbell in your top hand with your arm resting along your side, palm facing down
  • Brace your core and raise the dumbbell directly out to the side until your arm is roughly parallel to the floor
  • Pause briefly at the top, keeping your elbow slightly bent throughout
  • Lower the dumbbell slowly back to the starting position under control
  • Complete all reps on one side, then switch sides
