Dumbbell Incline Close-Grip Press Variation

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Dumbbell Incline Close-Grip Press Variation.

MediumTricepsUpper chest

About this exercise

A dumbbell press performed on an incline bench with a close, neutral grip that shifts the load toward the upper chest and places greater emphasis on the triceps compared to a standard incline press. Keeping the dumbbells close together throughout the movement maximises medial chest activation and increases triceps recruitment.

How to Perform

  • Set an adjustable bench to a 30–45° incline and sit back with a dumbbell in each hand resting on your thighs
  • Press the dumbbells to arm's length above your upper chest, holding them close together with palms facing each other or slightly inward
  • Lower the dumbbells in a controlled manner toward your upper chest, keeping them no more than shoulder-width apart
  • Press the dumbbells back up explosively, squeezing the chest and triceps at the top
  • Avoid letting the dumbbells drift wide — maintain the close grip position throughout the set
