About this exercise

An alternating dumbbell fly performed on an incline bench that isolates the upper chest while the one-arm-at-a-time pattern increases the range of motion and the time under tension per side. The incline angle shifts emphasis to the clavicular (upper) portion of the pectorals.

How to Perform

  • Set an adjustable bench to a 30–45° incline and lie back with a dumbbell in each hand
  • Press both dumbbells up to the starting position above your chest, palms facing each other
  • Keep a slight bend in your elbows throughout the movement
  • Lower one dumbbell in a wide arc out to the side until you feel a stretch across the upper chest
  • Squeeze the pec to bring the dumbbell back up to the centre position
  • Immediately lower the other dumbbell in the same arc
  • Alternate arms for the desired number of repetitions per side
