Dumbbell Head Supported Row

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Dumbbell Head Supported Row.

MediumMiddle back

About this exercise

A bilateral dumbbell row performed with your chest resting on an incline bench and your forehead supported, eliminating torso swing and keeping the lats under constant tension. The stable position allows you to focus entirely on driving the elbows back and squeezing the back muscles.

How to Perform

  • Set an adjustable bench to roughly 45 degrees and lie face down with your chest on the pad and your forehead resting on the top edge
  • Let both dumbbells hang directly below your shoulders with a neutral grip
  • Retract your shoulder blades and row both dumbbells up toward your hips, keeping your elbows close to your sides
  • Squeeze your lats and upper back hard at the top of the movement
  • Lower the dumbbells slowly under control back to the start position
  • Repeat for the desired number of reps
