Dumbbell Hammer Curl (Strict)

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Dumbbell Hammer Curl (Strict).

MediumBiceps

About this exercise

The dumbbell hammer strict curl is a biceps and brachialis isolation exercise that uses a neutral (hammer) grip and strict form to eliminate momentum. By keeping the upper arms pinned against the sides throughout the movement, all swinging is removed and the load is placed entirely on the elbow flexors.

How to Perform

  • Stand upright holding a dumbbell in each hand with a neutral grip, palms facing inward
  • Press your upper arms firmly against your sides and keep them stationary throughout the set
  • Without swinging your torso or letting your elbows drift forward, curl both dumbbells toward your shoulders
  • Squeeze your biceps and brachialis firmly at the top of the movement
  • Lower both dumbbells slowly back to the starting position under full control
