About this exercise

The dumbbell hammer preacher curl is a unilateral biceps and brachialis exercise performed on a preacher bench with a neutral (hammer) grip. Bracing the upper arm on the angled pad eliminates body English and keeps tension on the working muscles throughout the full range of motion.

How to Perform

  • Sit at the preacher bench and place the back of your upper arm flat against the angled pad
  • Hold a dumbbell in a neutral grip with your palm facing inward toward your body
  • Starting with your arm nearly fully extended, curl the dumbbell upward toward your shoulder
  • Squeeze your biceps and brachialis at the top of the movement
  • Lower the dumbbell slowly back down until your arm is just short of full extension
  • Complete all reps on one arm before switching to the other
