About this exercise

The dumbbell front rack lunge is a unilateral lower-body exercise where a pair of dumbbells are held at shoulder height in a front rack position while performing alternating or walking lunges. The front-loaded position shifts emphasis onto the quadriceps and requires significant core stability to maintain an upright torso throughout.

How to Perform

  • Stand tall holding a dumbbell in each hand, cleaned up to shoulder height with elbows pointing forward in a front rack position
  • Keep your chest up and core braced
  • Step one foot forward and lower into a lunge until both knees are at roughly 90 degrees
  • Keep the front knee tracking over the foot and the torso upright without letting the dumbbells drop
  • Push through the front heel to return to standing, then step forward with the opposite leg and repeat
