About this exercise

The dumbbell drive front raise is a front raise variation that uses a slight leg drive and hip thrust to generate momentum at the start of the lift, allowing you to overload the anterior deltoids at the top of the range where they are weakest. The controlled lowering phase maximises the eccentric stimulus on the front shoulders.

How to Perform

  • Stand tall with feet hip-width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand in front of your thighs with palms facing down
  • Initiate the movement with a slight dip of the knees and a quick hip extension to create momentum
  • Use that drive to swing the dumbbells forward and upward to shoulder height or slightly above
  • At the top, control the momentum and pause briefly
  • Slowly lower the dumbbells back to the starting position under full control
  • Reset and repeat for the desired number of reps
