Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Dumbbell Drag Biceps Curl.

About this exercise

The dumbbell drag curl is a bicep isolation exercise where the dumbbells are dragged up along the sides of the torso rather than swinging forward. By keeping the elbows pulled behind the body throughout the movement, the long head of the biceps is placed under greater tension, resulting in a strong peak contraction at the top.

How to Perform

  • Stand upright holding a dumbbell in each hand with a supinated (palms-forward) grip
  • Keep your elbows close to your sides and slightly behind your torso
  • Curl the dumbbells upward by dragging them along the sides of your body — do not let them swing forward
  • Keep the elbows traveling backward as you raise the weights
  • Squeeze the biceps hard at the top of the movement
  • Lower the dumbbells slowly back to the starting position while maintaining contact with the body
