Dumbbell Decline Twist Fly

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Dumbbell Decline Twist Fly.

MediumMiddle chest

About this exercise

The dumbbell decline twist fly combines a standard decline fly with a supinating wrist rotation at the top, adding an extra peak contraction in the lower chest by bringing the pectoral fibers through their full range of motion. The twist increases muscle activation compared to a conventional fly.

How to Perform

  • Secure your feet at the top of a decline bench and lie back holding a dumbbell in each hand with palms facing each other and arms extended above your lower chest
  • Keep a slight bend in your elbows and lower the dumbbells out to the sides in a wide arc
  • Once you feel a full stretch in the lower chest, sweep the dumbbells back up along the same arc
  • As the dumbbells meet at the top, rotate your wrists outward (supinate) so your palms face away from each other to maximise the peak contraction
  • Reverse the rotation and lower the dumbbells again into the next rep
  • Repeat for the desired number of reps
