About this exercise

The dumbbell decline sit-up is a weighted abdominal exercise performed on a decline bench while holding a dumbbell at the chest. The decline angle increases the range of motion beyond a flat sit-up, while the added load makes it more challenging than the bodyweight version.

How to Perform

  • Secure your feet under the foot pads of a decline bench and lie back
  • Hold a dumbbell against your chest or upper torso with both hands
  • Brace your core and curl your torso upward, leading with the chest
  • Rise to a full seated position, bringing your chest toward your knees
  • Pause briefly at the top and squeeze the abs
  • Lower your torso slowly back to the starting position under control
  • Avoid pulling on your neck or using momentum to complete the movement
