About this exercise

The dumbbell decline shrug is a trapezius isolation exercise performed lying face down on a decline bench, allowing the shoulders to fully protract at the bottom for a deep stretch before shrugging upward. This angle shifts stress away from momentum and onto the upper trapezius and rear deltoids.

How to Perform

  • Set a bench to a moderate decline and lie face down with your chest near the high end, letting your arms hang toward the floor holding a dumbbell in each hand
  • Allow your shoulders to fully relax and protract to feel a deep stretch in the upper traps
  • Shrug your shoulders straight up toward your ears without bending the elbows
  • Hold the contracted position for a brief moment
  • Lower the dumbbells slowly back to the fully stretched position
  • Repeat for the desired number of reps
