About this exercise

The dumbbell decline pullover is performed lying on a decline bench, stretching and working the lats and lower chest through a long arc of motion. The decline angle increases the stretch on the lats at the overhead position and shifts more emphasis to the lower chest compared to the flat bench variation.

How to Perform

  • Set a bench to a moderate decline angle and secure your legs under the pad
  • Lie back on the bench and hold a single dumbbell with both hands beneath one end, arms extended overhead
  • Lower the dumbbell in a controlled arc behind your head until you feel a deep stretch in your lats and chest
  • Keep a slight bend in your elbows throughout to protect the joints
  • Pull the dumbbell back up in the same arc, driving your elbows toward your hips
  • Squeeze the lats and chest at the top of the movement
  • Keep your lower back pressed lightly into the bench and core braced throughout
