About this exercise

The dumbbell decline overhead sit-up is an advanced abdominal exercise performed on a decline bench while holding a dumbbell extended overhead throughout the movement. Keeping the weight overhead increases the lever arm and resistance, intensifying the demand on the abs compared to a standard weighted sit-up.

How to Perform

  • Secure your feet under the foot pads of a decline bench and lie back
  • Hold a dumbbell with both hands and extend your arms overhead, keeping them in line with your ears
  • Brace your core and begin curling your torso upward, leading with the chest
  • Maintain the dumbbell overhead as you rise to a full seated position
  • Pause briefly at the top, contracting the abs
  • Slowly lower your torso back to the starting position under control
  • Keep the lower back from hyperextending at the bottom of the movement
