About this exercise

The dumbbell decline hammer press is a chest pressing movement on a decline bench performed with a neutral (hammer) grip, palms facing each other. The neutral grip reduces shoulder stress while still targeting the lower chest, and places additional emphasis on the triceps long head.

How to Perform

  • Secure your feet at the top of a decline bench and lie back holding a dumbbell in each hand with a neutral grip (palms facing each other)
  • Position the dumbbells at chest level with elbows pointing outward at roughly 45 degrees
  • Press the dumbbells upward until your arms are fully extended above your lower chest
  • Pause briefly at the top
  • Lower the dumbbells in a controlled motion back to the starting position
  • Repeat for the desired number of reps
