About this exercise

The dumbbell decline bench press is a chest compound movement performed on a decline bench (head below hips), shifting the stress toward the lower portion of the pectoral muscles. Using dumbbells allows a greater range of motion and independent arm movement compared to a barbell variation.

How to Perform

  • Secure your feet at the top of a decline bench and lie back holding a dumbbell in each hand at chest level with a pronated grip
  • Retract your shoulder blades and keep your chest up
  • Press the dumbbells upward and slightly inward until your arms are fully extended above your lower chest
  • Pause briefly at the top
  • Lower the dumbbells in a controlled arc back to the starting position at chest level
  • Repeat for the desired number of reps
