About this exercise

The dumbbell close grip press targets the triceps by pressing two dumbbells held tightly together with a neutral grip. Squeezing the dumbbells together throughout the press shifts the emphasis from the chest onto the triceps and inner chest.

How to Perform

  • Lie on a flat bench holding two dumbbells with a neutral grip (palms facing each other), pressing the dumbbells together at chest level with elbows bent
  • Press the dumbbells upward while keeping them in contact with each other, extending your arms fully overhead
  • Hold briefly at the top, then lower the dumbbells back to your chest under control
  • Keep your elbows pointing straight up throughout the movement to maintain triceps emphasis
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions
