About this exercise

The Dumbbell Clean and Press is a full-body Olympic-style lift that combines an explosive hip-driven pull to bring dumbbells from hang to shoulder height, followed immediately by an overhead press. It develops power, coordination, and total-body strength in a single fluid movement.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet hip-width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand at your sides
  • Hinge slightly at the hips and bend your knees, letting the dumbbells hang at mid-thigh
  • Explosively extend your hips and knees, shrugging your shoulders to drive the dumbbells upward
  • Rotate your elbows forward and under the dumbbells to catch them at shoulder height in a front rack position
  • Brace your core and press the dumbbells overhead until your arms are fully extended
  • Lower the dumbbells back to your shoulders, then to the starting position with control
