About this exercise

The Dumbbell Alternating Plyometric Side Lunge is an explosive lateral lunge variation performed with dumbbells, alternating between left and right sides. The plyometric push-off between each rep develops leg power and hip mobility while elevating the heart rate, targeting the quadriceps, inner thighs, and glutes.

How to Perform

  • Stand upright holding a dumbbell in each hand at your sides
  • Push off explosively to the right and land in a wide side lunge — right knee bent, left leg extended straight
  • Keep your torso upright, hinge the hips back, and sink into the lunge under control
  • Drive off the right foot explosively and spring back toward center
  • Land softly and immediately push off to the left side into a side lunge
  • Continue alternating sides for the target number of reps
