About this exercise

The dumbbell bent over twisting row adds a rotational component to a standard single-arm bent-over row, engaging the obliques and improving thoracic rotation alongside the primary lat and biceps work. The twist at the top of the pull maximizes the range of motion and reinforces mind-muscle connection with the back musculature.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet hip-width apart and hinge at the hips to approximately 45 degrees, holding a dumbbell in one hand
  • Let the working arm hang fully extended below your shoulder with a neutral grip
  • Initiate the row by driving your elbow up and back, pulling the dumbbell toward your hip
  • As the dumbbell reaches the top, rotate your torso slightly toward the working side to deepen the contraction
  • Pause at the top, then unwind the rotation and lower the dumbbell in a controlled arc back to the start
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching to the other arm
