About this exercise

The dumbbell bench squat is a lower-body exercise in which you squat down to lightly touch a bench before standing back up, holding dumbbells at your sides. The bench provides a consistent depth reference and helps reinforce proper squat mechanics while loading the quadriceps and glutes.

How to Perform

  • Stand in front of a flat bench holding a dumbbell in each hand at your sides
  • Set your feet slightly wider than hip-width apart with toes pointed slightly outward
  • Keep your chest up and core braced as you begin to lower into a squat
  • Descend until you lightly touch or barely sit on the bench surface, keeping tension in your legs
  • Drive through your heels to stand back up to the starting position
  • Squeeze your glutes at the top before beginning the next repetition
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions
