About this exercise

The dumbbell seated bench press is a shoulder exercise performed sitting upright on an adjustable bench with the back supported. Pressing dumbbells overhead from a seated, stable position allows you to focus on deltoid strength without involving the lower body for momentum.

How to Perform

  • Set an adjustable bench to an upright or slightly reclined position and sit down with a dumbbell in each hand
  • Rest the dumbbells on your thighs, then use your legs to kick them up to shoulder height as you lean back into the bench
  • Hold the dumbbells at ear level with palms facing forward and elbows at roughly ninety degrees
  • Press both dumbbells upward and slightly inward until your arms are fully extended overhead
  • Lower the dumbbells back to ear level in a controlled manner
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions
