About this exercise

The Dumbbell Bar Grip Sumo Squat is a lower-body compound exercise where you hold a single dumbbell vertically by gripping the bar (shaft) between the plates, allowing it to hang between your legs. The wide sumo stance emphasizes the inner thighs, glutes, and quads.

How to Perform

  • Stand with your feet wider than shoulder-width apart and toes pointed outward at 45 degrees
  • Hold one dumbbell vertically by gripping its bar (the central shaft) with both hands, letting it hang between your legs
  • Stand tall with your chest up, shoulders back, and core braced
  • Push your knees out in line with your toes and lower your hips down until your thighs are parallel to the floor or lower
  • Keep your back straight and heels flat on the floor throughout the descent
  • Drive through your heels and squeeze your glutes to press back up to the starting position
