About this exercise

The Dumbbell Assisted Bulgarian Split Squat combines the rear-foot-elevated split squat with a light dumbbell held in each hand for added resistance, while still allowing you to use a support for balance assistance. It bridges the gap between the fully assisted bodyweight version and the freestanding loaded split squat, building unilateral leg strength and stability.

How to Perform

  • Hold a dumbbell in each hand at your sides and stand facing away from a bench
  • Place the top of one foot on the bench behind you and adjust your front foot forward until your shin stays vertical at the bottom
  • Lightly touch your free hand or a dumbbell to a support if needed for balance
  • Brace your core and lower your back knee toward the floor in a controlled motion
  • Descend until your front thigh is roughly parallel to the floor
  • Drive through your front heel to press back up to the starting position
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching legs
