About this exercise

The dumbbell fly is a chest isolation exercise performed lying on a flat bench. With arms extended and a slight bend at the elbows, you lower the dumbbells out to the sides in a wide arc, then squeeze the chest to bring them back together. It effectively stretches and contracts the pectoral muscles through a large range of motion.

How to Perform

  • Lie flat on a horizontal bench holding a dumbbell in each hand, arms extended above your chest
  • Maintain a slight bend in your elbows throughout the movement
  • Slowly lower the dumbbells out to the sides in a wide arc until you feel a stretch in your chest
  • Keep your back flat against the bench and your feet on the floor
  • Squeeze your chest muscles and bring the dumbbells back together above your chest in the same arc
  • Pause briefly at the top, then repeat for the desired number of reps
