About this exercise

The dumbbell alternating floor press is a chest exercise performed lying on the floor, where you press one dumbbell at a time while the opposite arm rests with elbow on the ground. The floor limits the range of motion at the bottom, reducing shoulder strain, while the alternating pattern increases time under tension and core demand.

How to Perform

  • Lie on your back on the floor with knees bent and feet flat, holding a dumbbell in each hand at chest level
  • Press one dumbbell straight up until the arm is fully extended while keeping the other elbow rested on the floor
  • Lower the pressed dumbbell with control back to the starting position
  • Immediately press the other dumbbell up in the same manner
  • Keep your lower back in contact with the floor throughout
  • Maintain a controlled tempo on both the press and the lowering phase
