About this exercise

The Dumbbell Alternate Z Press is a seated floor overhead press performed with legs extended straight, pressing one arm at a time in alternating fashion. Pressing alternately demands extra anti-rotation core stability while keeping leg drive eliminated by the floor-seated position.

How to Perform

  • Sit on the floor with your legs extended straight in front of you
  • Hold a dumbbell in each hand at shoulder height with palms facing forward
  • Brace your core and keep your torso upright
  • Press the right dumbbell overhead until your arm is fully extended
  • Lower the right dumbbell back to shoulder level under control
  • Press the left dumbbell overhead until your arm is fully extended
  • Lower the left dumbbell back to shoulder level
  • Continue alternating arms for the desired number of reps
