About this exercise

The dumbbell alternate side press is a standing shoulder exercise in which you press one dumbbell overhead at a time, leaning slightly to the opposite side to engage the deltoids through a full lateral arc. Alternating sides keeps the core actively stabilizing throughout the set.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand at shoulder height with palms facing forward
  • Engage your core and maintain a tall, neutral spine
  • Press one dumbbell overhead until the arm is fully extended, leaning slightly away from the pressing arm
  • Lower the dumbbell back to shoulder height under control
  • Press the opposite dumbbell overhead while leaning to the other side
  • Continue alternating sides for the desired number of repetitions per arm
