About this exercise

A standing or seated dumbbell shoulder press performed one arm at a time in an alternating fashion. Pressing one arm while the other holds at shoulder height demands greater core stabilization and allows a slightly fuller range of motion per arm.

How to Perform

  • Stand upright (or sit on a bench) holding a dumbbell in each hand at shoulder height, palms facing forward
  • Brace your core and keep your back straight throughout the movement
  • Press the right dumbbell straight overhead until the arm is fully extended
  • Lower the right dumbbell back to shoulder height as you simultaneously begin pressing the left dumbbell
  • Continue alternating arms in a smooth, controlled rhythm
  • Complete the target reps for each arm
