Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Dumbbell Alternate Seated Hammer Curl.

EasyBiceps

About this exercise

The dumbbell alternate seated hammer curl targets the biceps and brachialis by curling one dumbbell at a time with a neutral (thumbs-up) grip while seated. Alternating arms ensures each side works independently and helps correct left-to-right muscle imbalances.

How to Perform

  • Sit on a bench holding a dumbbell in each hand with a neutral grip (palms facing each other), arms hanging at your sides
  • Keeping your upper arm stationary, curl one dumbbell upward toward the same shoulder until the biceps is fully contracted
  • Hold briefly at the top, then lower the dumbbell under control back to the starting position
  • Repeat with the opposite arm, alternating throughout the set
