About this exercise

The Dumbbell Alternate Biceps Curl is a classic isolation exercise where you curl one dumbbell at a time in an alternating fashion, allowing each arm to fully contract before switching sides. The alternating pattern helps correct muscular imbalances and keeps total time under tension high.

How to Perform

  • Stand upright holding a dumbbell in each hand at your sides with palms facing inward
  • Curl one dumbbell upward, rotating your wrist so your palm faces your shoulder at the top
  • Squeeze your biceps hard at full flexion, then lower the weight back to the start
  • Immediately begin curling the other arm while keeping the first arm extended
  • Continue alternating arms in a smooth, controlled rhythm
  • Keep your upper arms stationary and avoid swinging the torso throughout the set
