About this exercise

The dumbbell alternate bench press with a high start begins with both dumbbells pressed fully overhead, then alternates lowering and pressing one arm at a time. This unilateral variation increases core stabilization demands and allows each side of the chest to work independently, improving muscular balance.

How to Perform

  • Lie flat on a horizontal bench holding a dumbbell in each hand, both arms fully extended above the chest
  • Keep one arm locked out while you lower the opposite dumbbell toward your chest in a controlled arc
  • Press the lowered dumbbell back to the starting position
  • Repeat with the other arm, maintaining full extension on the resting side
  • Keep your feet flat on the floor and your back naturally arched throughout
  • Alternate sides for the desired number of repetitions
