About this exercise

The deep push-up hold is an isometric bodyweight exercise where you lower into the bottom of a push-up below the normal floor level — using push-up handles or parallel surfaces — and hold the stretched position. This extended range of motion places maximum tension on the chest and front deltoids, building strength and flexibility simultaneously.

How to Perform

  • Place your hands on two elevated surfaces (such as push-up handles, yoga blocks, or parallel bars) set slightly wider than shoulder-width apart
  • Start in a high plank position with your body in a straight line from head to heels
  • Lower your chest slowly between the handles until you feel a deep stretch across the chest
  • Hold the bottom position with your elbows at roughly 45 degrees from your torso
  • Keep your core braced and hips in line with your spine throughout the hold
  • Press back up to the starting position to complete one rep, or hold for the target duration
