Deficit Push-Up

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Deficit Push-Up.

About this exercise

The Deep Push-Up, also known as a deficit push-up, is performed with the hands elevated on handles, dumbbells, or push-up bars so the chest can descend below hand level, creating a greater range of motion than a standard push-up. This increased depth produces a deeper stretch in the lower and mid chest and greater muscle activation.

How to Perform

  • Place two push-up handles, dumbbells, or similar elevated platforms on the floor at shoulder-width apart
  • Get into a high plank position with one hand gripping each handle, arms fully extended
  • Keep your body in a straight line from head to heels with core braced
  • Lower your chest slowly between the handles, going deeper than you could on the floor, until you feel a full stretch in the chest
  • Pause briefly at the bottom without resting on the ground
  • Press back up explosively until your arms are fully extended
  • Repeat for the desired number of reps

About the Deficit Push-Up

The Deficit Push-Up is a foundational movement that builds strength and muscle through controlled, progressive overload. Train it 1 to 2 times per week with 3 to 5 working sets per session, gradually adding weight or reps as form holds up.
