Crunch on a Bench

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Crunch on a Bench.

EasyAbs

About this exercise

A classic abdominal crunch performed while lying on a flat bench, allowing a slight hip-flexor stretch at the bottom of each rep and a full range of motion for the rectus abdominis. The bench elevation lets your torso dip slightly below parallel, offering greater range than a floor crunch.

How to Perform

  • Lie on your back on a flat bench with your knees bent and feet flat on the bench or hooked over the end
  • Place your hands lightly behind your head or across your chest
  • Exhale and curl your upper back off the bench by contracting your abs, bringing your chest toward your knees
  • Hold the top position briefly, feeling the abdominal contraction
  • Slowly lower your upper back back to the bench in a controlled manner
  • Avoid pulling on your neck with your hands; let your abs do the work
  • Repeat for the target number of repetitions
