About this exercise

The crossover kneeling hip flexor stretch targets the hip flexors and rectus femoris through a half-kneeling position combined with a subtle rotational cross-over of the front foot. The crossover alignment adds a rotational element that deepens the stretch into the iliotibial band and lateral hip flexors.

How to Perform

  • Kneel on your right knee with your left foot placed forward and slightly crossed to the right of your midline
  • Keep your rear knee directly below your hip and place your hands on your front thigh or hip for balance
  • Shift your hips forward gently until you feel a stretch in the front of your right hip and thigh
  • Gently rotate your torso to the left over your front leg to deepen the crossover stretch
  • Keep your torso upright, avoid overarching your lower back
  • Hold the position, breathing steadily and allowing the hip flexor to relax into the stretch
  • Switch sides and repeat
