Couch Stretch

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Couch Stretch.

EasyQuadriceps

About this exercise

A deep hip-flexor and quadriceps stretch performed with the rear foot elevated against a wall or couch, targeting the rectus femoris and iliopsoas — muscle groups that are chronically shortened from prolonged sitting.

How to Perform

  • Kneel facing away from a wall or couch with your back knee near the base
  • Place the top of your rear foot against the wall (or onto the couch cushion) so the shin runs along the surface
  • Step your front foot forward until both knees form roughly 90-degree angles
  • Brace your core and avoid letting your lower back arch excessively
  • Slowly drive your hips forward and downward to deepen the stretch in the front of the rear hip and thigh
  • Hold the position for the prescribed duration, breathing steadily
  • Switch legs and repeat on the other side

About the Couch Stretch

The Couch Stretch is a foundational movement that builds strength and muscle through controlled, progressive overload. Train it 1 to 2 times per week with 3 to 5 working sets per session, gradually adding weight or reps as form holds up.
